Throughout the school year, Partin students are learning important social-emotional and life skills through the Overcoming Obstacles curriculum. These lessons focus on skills like cooperation, responsibility, respect, integrity, kindness, perseverance, conflict resolution and more.
Our PTA Social-Emotional Learning Challenge gives families a simple way to continue those lessons at home, while giving students a fun way to show what they’ve learned.
Being responsible means making good choices, doing what is expected of us, and taking ownership of our actions.
For our younger All Stars, that starts with understanding that everyone has responsibilities and learning to take care of the jobs that belong to them. The lesson also teaches that being responsible helps others trust and depend on us and that our actions can have consequences.
Our older All Stars take that idea a step further by thinking about the connection between choices and consequences and learning how to accept responsibility when they make a mistake.
The big idea for every All Star?
I am responsible for the choices I make—and when I make a mistake, I can take ownership, learn from it, and make a better choice next time. ⭐
Try working some of these questions naturally into your conversations:
What are some things you’re responsible for at home? At school?
What does it feel like when someone knows they can count on you?
What could happen if you don’t take care of one of your responsibilities?
Tell me about a responsible choice you made today.
If you make a mistake, what can you do to take responsibility for it?
For older students, you can take the conversation a little further:
“What could you do differently next time?”
That’s an important part of the 3–5 lesson: students practice reflecting on their choices instead of making excuses or blaming someone else.
There aren’t necessarily right or wrong answers. The goal is to help kids recognize that their choices matter and they have the power to make things right when mistakes happen.
Everyday family life is full of opportunities for children to practice responsibility!
Encourage your child to keep track of their backpack, homework, water bottle and other belongings instead of relying on an adult to remember everything for them.
Give your child an age-appropriate responsibility they can own—feeding a pet, making their bed, putting away laundry, setting the table or completing another family chore.
Encourage your child to complete something they’ve agreed to do without needing repeated reminders. For younger students especially, responsibilities should be age-appropriate.
When something goes wrong, help your child focus on their own actions rather than immediately looking for someone else to blame.
Responsibility doesn’t mean never making a mistake! For older All Stars, the Overcoming Obstacles lesson teaches students to tell the truth, apologize or make things right, accept the consequence, think about what they could do differently, and then move forward.
One of the easiest ways to reinforce responsibility is simply to notice it.
Instead of only saying “Good job!”, try naming the responsible behavior you saw:
“I noticed you remembered that without being asked!”
“Thank you for following through on what you said you would do.”
“I knew I could count on you!”
“I like how you told the truth and took responsibility for what happened.”
“You made a mistake, figured out how to make it right, and learned from it. That’s being responsible.”
As children grow, so do their responsibilities.
Encourage your All Star to think about how their choices can make a difference in each of these areas:
Taking care of my belongings, completing my work and making healthy choices.
Helping at home, keeping promises and doing my part.
Following expectations, taking care of our school and being someone others can count on.
Taking care of shared spaces and thinking about how my choices affect others.
